Graduated from Hokkaido University School of Dentistry in 2003, completed the specialist course at the National Institute of Public Health in 2004, and completed the doctoral course at Hokkaido University Graduate School of Dentistry in 2007 (Doctor of Dental Science). After serving as a visiting researcher at University College London and an associate professor at Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry, he has been a professor in the Department of Health Promotion Dentistry at Tokyo Medical and Dental University since 2020. In October 2024, the university's name was changed to Institute of Science Tokyo due to the university's merger, and he continues to serve in this position to this day.
He has co-authored books such as "Self-care Guidance: Get Rid of Misunderstandings and Assumptions! This is How to Do It Now! Latest Interpretations and Clinical Practices (Quintessence Publishing)", "Dictionary of Epidemiology (Asakura Publishing Co., Ltd.)", "Health in Japan: Social Epidemiology of Japan since the 1964 Tokyo Olympics (Oxford University Press)", and "Textbook on Oral Health Conditions, Research Topics and Methods (Springer International Publishing)".
