He was a visiting professor at Hiroshima University and a specially appointed fellow at the Center for Research and Development Strategy at the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Prior to assuming his current position, he was a professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology and Institute of Science Tokyo.
He specializes in U.S. overseas base policy. He is the author of “U.S. bases in Japan: U.S. Forces and UN Forces, 80 Years of ‘Two Faces’” (Chuokoron-Shinsha, 2024) and “Base Politics: Origins of Postwar U.S. Overseas Base Expansion Policy” (Hakuto-Shobo, 2012, Saeki Kiichi Prize), “The Disappearance of Bases 1968-1973: U.S. Base ‘Withdrawal’ Policy in Mainland Japan” (Keiso Shobo, 2020, Inoki Masamichi Award Special Prize), “Why Must the Base Be in Okinawa” (Chikumashobo, 2022), etc.
