Graduated with Bachelors of Science in Mathematics and Physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1987; Ph.D in Physics (high energy theory) from the University of Texas in 1993. Was a postdoctoral fellow and later resident faculty at the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico from 2000 to 2011. Has worked on the Origin of Life at several universities in the U.S., and maintains current affiliations in the Georgia Institute of Technology (Center for integration in the Origin Of Life: iCOOL), University of Wisconsin (Wisconsin Institute for Discovery), and Santa Fe Institute (External Faculty). Is the author, with Harold Morowitz, of the book The Origin and Nature of Life on Earth: The Emergence of the Fourth Geosphere, winner of the Marsh Book of the Year Award for Earth Sciences in 2017. Also authored, with Supriya Krishnamurthy, Symmetry and Collective Fluctuations in Evolutionary Games, and with Martin Shubik, The Guidance of an Enterprise Economy. Research interests, integrated with Origin of Life and Complex Systems more generally, include non-equilibrium stochastic processes, institutional economics, and the history and organization of human languages.
