Received Ph.D. from Keio University in 2009. He has since held positions as a JSPS Overseas Research Fellow, a researcher at NASA Ames Research Center, and research scientist and adjunct associate professor at ELSI before the current position. His research spans a wide range of topics, including the origins and evolution of life and building a synthetic cell. He was awarded the WIRED Audi INNOVATION AWARD in 2016.
